\section{Research activity}

During 1989--1993, the main research topic was Testing and Verifying
Digital Circuits, as well as Representation Theory of Boolean Functions
(Binary Decision Diagrams, etc.). In 1993, my MSc thesis (related to the topic)
obtained the Arnold Humal prize, which is presented to young Estonian mathematicians
yearly.

During 1993--1996, the main topic was graph theory.
The results on certain algebraic structure theory of graphs is the main
topic of my PhD thesis (1999)

My interest in Cryptography started way back in 1990, related to
attempts to improve the password defense system in Tallinn Technical University.
More serious studies in cryptography began in 1993, when I was hired as a junior
researcher by the Institute of Cybernetics.
The first paper about organizational aspects of infomation security
was presented at an international (database) conference held in Tallinn at 1996.

Practical experience in cryptography as well as the knowledge about
digital circuit design were a good starting point to some practice-oriented
works together with J\"uri P\~oldre at Tallinn Techical University.
A VLSI circuit (with about 300,000 gates)
capable of fast IDEA-encryption and (relatively efficient) RSA-based key exchange
was designed. About 30 samples of the chip were implemented (in real silicon) and
successfully tested. A research paper was published
about this design experiment.

During 1997--2002, the main research topic was related to long-term
authenticity of digital documents. The main motivation was my participation
in a governmental commission for developing legal
basis (in Estonia) for using electronic documents in the public sector.
One of my most important papers [4] about time-stamping was initiated from
the practical problems that raised during the work of this commission.
In the later papers [5,6] about time-stamping,
some technical improvements of the initial ideas were introduced.
The papers [6,7,8,9] about electronic notarization are also related to my
work in the said commission.

During 2003, the main research topic was to increase the efficiency of
electronic signature solutions and to revisit the notions of practical security
of electronic signatures [12,13].
At the moment, the notion and estimation of practical security is still one of
the main research topics.

During 2004, my research was focused on formal security notions of time-stamping
schemes. The results [14] were published at ASIACRYPT 2004.
